About the event
Hello All,
Tourism in the Coastal Bend is a huge part of our economy. Birders from all over the world visit our picturesque towns/cities to catch a glimpse of our migratory and local diverse avian population. Rescuing and rehabbing our wild birds is very important for our coastal bend communities not only for preservation, but for our local economy. Businesses and residents from Port Lavaca to Kingsville know that if they call us we will respond and do our utmost best to rescue, rehab, release and educate. Countless times, we've been called by County Navigation Districts, tree trimming companies, electric companies, local airports, stores and gas stations, to name just a few, for assistance and advice on preserving a precious nest or relocating it.
Wing Ding 2024 is Wings Rescue Center's annual fundraiser. It is the only event fundraiser we hold.
Wings Rescue Center (WRC) averages 900+ wild bird rescues each year throughout the Counties of Aransas, San Patricio, Refugio, Nueces, Calhoun and Kleberg. WRC is a non-profit 501-C-3 and State and Federally permitted wild bird rescue rehabilitation center . Our staff is made up of 100% volunteers. All monies raised go to the Birds.
WRC's volunteers perform rescues, triage, bring birds to veterinarian visits, rehab, administer medication, feed and release recovered birds in safe areas. Our emergency call center averages +/- 2500 calls per year. Callers report injured wild birds, have questions about birds found on the ground, seek advice on how to aid a bird found and so much more.
In January our dream came true when we opened our Education Center. We offer free presentations to the community to educate them about birds, local resources and conservation of the species along the Coastal Bend of Texas.
All funds raised during our Wing Ding will be utilized for
- care and maintenance of our small bird hospital, raptor hospital, mews, edu center and other buildings
- purchasing medical equipment and medications
- triage supplies (such as wound cleanser & treatments, Pedialyte, parasite and insect treatments)
- veterinarian visits
- cleaning supplies (1 bird friendly disinfectant alone costs $650 annually)
- personal protective equipment (PPE)
- utilities payments (water, electricity, Wi-Fi, cell service for dispatch)
- educational materials
- approximately $12,000.00 annually for food (worms, fish, seed, a variety of meats and many other dietary requirements)
Our 2024-2025 Goals
As we continue to grow are in need of
- new cabinets, counters, sinks and faucets
- 5 raptor transport carriers (3 large, 2 medium)
- 2 dishwashers
- ongoing volunteer training and certifications
- portable medical equipment (x-ray machine is top of the list)
- incubators
- heating pads
- refrigerator for raptor hospital
- AC unit for raptor hospital
